The Grendon Underwood / Beachborough Project
A Local History Study
Teaching
During
the whole process the Head, Ian Elkington,
looked after my class, whilst I took the children six at a time to see a variety
of slides, and interview Miss Annie George at her house. These interviews
were all recorded by the children using the tape recorder. The commentary
from Miss George was then transcribed into MS Word and saved to disc by volunteers.
We had to decide what to do with the hundreds of slides that we had borrowed. Initially, it was our intention to make copies of the slides.
However, it soon became clear that this would be very expensive. We were also determined to use ICT as much as we possibly could. Therefore, the school bought a good scanner.

My
next task was to teach the whole class how to use the scanner. Then working
in pairs the children linked together the images of the slides they had scanned
with the transcribed commentary from Miss George, creating Word files which
they saved to a CD-Rom, ready to place on the web site, which we were already
designing.

One of our parents, Mrs Anne Taylor, a professional web site designer, was employed to create our web site. She also took small group sessions, where she explained to the children what she had created from their original work, which the children had generated and saved to CD-Rom.
